“More Tolerable for the Lamanites Than for Them”

Brant Gardner

Rhetoric: Alma recapitulates the precise argument he has been making. One of his literary devices has been the repetition of terms with similar meanings to triangulate the concept; here he uses thematic repetition to cover the argument from more than one angle. Even though the argument advances nothing new, this slightly different repetition gives it emphasis. (See commentary accompanying Alma 7:24.)

Such repetitions are frequently effective in oral discourse to make sure that the point is heard and understood by an audience that will not be able to read it in the morning paper and who may be distracted by others around or by small interruptions.
