“It Was the Custom of the People of Nephi to Call Their Lands”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

“It was the custom of the people of Nephi to call their lands, and their cities … after the name of him who first possessed them.” An example at the beginning of an older civilization is the Jaredites calling their temporary camp on the shore of the ocean Moriancumer, after the brother of Jared (Ether 2:13). It is a long-standing custom of many peoples to name a place after its first settler; for example, consider the Utah communities of Ogden, Layton, Orem, and Provo, which were named after Peter Skene Ogden, Christopher Layton, Walter C. Orem, and Etienne Provost, respectively.
