According to the report of Alma, the Savior would be born of Mary “at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers” (verse 10). Alma’s prophecy that Jesus would be born “at Jerusalem” has drawn significant criticism since the Book of Mormon’s first publication in 1830. As all Christians know, Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem. However, with the discovery of ancient documents such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, it has become apparent that Bethlehem was anciently considered part of the “land of Jerusalem.” (See Echoes, 211.)
