“According to the Order of God”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

The Church is a house of order governed by the spirit of prophecy and revelation. God has ordained that prophets shall regulate the affairs of His Church and kingdom according to eternal principles. Following Alma’s extraordinary discourse to the people of Zarahemla, the people begin again to have a clear vision of the covenant duties incumbent upon them, and the order of the Church is established in Zarahemla. President John Taylor explains the concept of the order of the Church: “The order of the church is for us to fulfil and magnify the calling to which we are called, and do it with an eye single to the glory of God, each man fulfilling the various duties and responsibilities of his office” (John Taylor, The Gospel Kingdom: Selections from the Writings and Discourses of John Taylor, comp. G. Homer Durham [Salt Lake City: Improvement Era, 1941], 150–151).

President David O. McKay added the following:

Establishing the order of the Church refers to the method of regular arrangements, procedures, rules, regulations and operations so that everything is in its proper place and working well … being directed by the priesthood.
“The Church of Jesus Christ was organized in accordance with the order of the Church as recorded in the New Testament,” said Joseph Smith. The practical and beneficent workings of this organization prove its divine authenticity. (Gospel Ideals: Selections from the Discourses of David O. McKay [Salt Lake City: Improvement Era, 1953], 85)
