“Setting Your Hearts Upon the Vain Things of the World”

Brant Gardner

Rhetoric: In asking, “Can ye withstand these sayings?” Alma is asking his audience if they can hear these words and not be affected by them. If they can, they are “trampl[ing] the Holy One under your feet.” Those who do, he charges, wear costly apparel and set their hearts upon the riches of the world—the characteristics of the competing religion that has plagued Nephite society from at least Benjamin’s day and probably caused Mosiah1 to lead his people out of the city of Nephi. (See commentary accompanying Omni 1:12.)
