Rhetoric: Alma elaborates on what he desires from his congregation. Those who would deny their culpability (thus becoming children of Satan) will not receive the good that comes from Yahweh but rather the evil that comes from the devil. In verse 41, he explains that this inner state is translated directly into their actions. Those who follow the good shepherd will do good actions. Those who follow the devil will do evil. Alma is returning here to his demand that those in his congregation who have been guilty of “murders” and “all manner of wickedness” stop it.
