Alma gave up his secular job, his government post, to serve the Lord full-time. He could see no alternative other than to go among the people and “preach the word of God unto them, to stir them up in remembrance of their duty, … seeing no way that he might reclaim them save it were in bearing down in pure testimony against them.” That is a key to success in missionary work: bear pure testimony of the word. Today pure testimony includes declaration of belief in the Father, in his Son, in the Prophet Joseph Smith and other living prophets, in the Book of Mormon, and in the Restoration of the true Church of Jesus Christ.
