After only four years of the new government, the order of Nehor, as it will become known (see Alma 14:16), sought to overthrow Alma’s regime. Mosiah’s guideline to choose “by the voice of this people” (Mosiah 29:25) was still fresh in their minds (Alma 2:3). They also recognized that the issue was freedom of religion (v. 4). The majority of the people, again as Mosiah had said, chose what was right and rejected Amlici as their king (v. 7). How this vote was cast was not recorded. However, as typical of dissenters, Amlici was not willing to abide by the voice of the people. He influenced his followers to make him their king (v. 9). Therefore, the spreading of priestcraft increased even more rapidly (see Alma 1:16).
