Because peace was restored, the Church and its members prospered, and to their credit, they did not send away the poor and needy. These verses describe a pattern for welfare assistance that the Church today embraces. Verse 30 is profound in its description of the royal law being practiced (James 2:1–9). On the other hand, wickedness and sloth abounded among those not belonging to the Church.
With Amlici’s rejection by the voice of the people (Alma 2:7), we again see the truth of Mosiah’s axiom that “it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right” (Mosiah 29:26). However, the supporters of Amlici made him their king, formed another splinter group, joined the Lamanites, warred against the Nephites, and then were defeated because the Nephites were strengthened by the Lord. These episodes confirm the Lord’s ancient promise to his covenant people that if they would look to him (Deuteronomy 20:1–4; Joshua 23:10), he would strengthen them and fight for them.
