“To Be Judged According to the Crimes Which He Had Committed”

Brant Gardner

Nehor’s murder provides an obvious cause for his arrest and being taken to judgment. But he will be judged for his “crimes” (plural), not simply murder. In fact, the murder is not even the first crime discussed. In the text, it even appears to be a lesser crime.

Variant: Notwithstanding the logic of reading “crimes” into this situation, the plural was introduced in 1852. Prior to that time it read “according to the crime which he had committed.” Nevertheless, it appears that even the singular crime must refer to a collection of issues, based on the descriptions of that “crime.”
