Every Man Should Labor with His Own Hands

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

Mosiah took this favorable opportunity to warn his subjects not to let pride and haughtiness enter their manner of life. He advised them not to permit these evils to threaten, or even endanger, the peace that had, for so many years, guided them to undreamed of heights of prosperity and brotherly love.

Furthermore, Mosiah declared that every able-bodied man should labor with his own hands to support himself. This injunction included the priests and teachers who were capable so to do. There were to be no exceptions to this rule. In conforming themselves to these requirements, the people were blessed by the Lord, and soon they "did abound in the grace of God." We understand grace to mean, favor, kindness, or mercy.
