If ye forgive men their trespasses your Heavenly Father will also forgive you, the Savior promised; “but,” he warned, “if ye forgive not men their trespasses neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (3 Nephi 13:14-15).
It is not our right to withhold forgiveness; to do so is to assume the prerogative of God. “He who will not forgive others,” wrote Spencer W. Kimball,“breaks down the bridge over which he himself must travel. This is a truth taught by the Lord in the parable of the unmerciful servant [see Matthew 18:23-35] who demanded to be forgiven but was merciless to one who asked forgiveness of him.” (The Miracle of Forgiveness, p. 269.)
