The Book of Mormon peoples evidently had the custom of taking upon themselves the name of their leader. Thus the two early groups were known as the Nephites and Lamanites because the names of their first leaders were Nephi and Laman. Later, when a small group of Nephites headed by Mosiah came down into the land of Zarahemla, they discovered that the people there were called "the people of Zarahemla" after the name of their leader. (Omni 14.) Now when the two peoples of Zarahemla and Nephi combined together, they become known as Nephites "because the kingdom had been conferred upon none but those who were descendants of Nephi." (Mosiah 25:13.)
