The Nephite joys, sorrows, and concerns for the welfare of the souls of the Lamanites strongly supports the conclusion that the people of Zarahemla were already members of the church, as suggested above. The taking of the name of Nephi by the children of Amulon and his brethren (v. 12) also suggests their desire to be affiliated with the people of God. There is no specific record of the kingdom belonging to only the Nephites, but it must have been a political guideline given when Mosiah the first was “appointed to be their king” (Omni 1:19; see also Mosiah 29:6).
