In addition to Amulon’s personal enmity for Alma, their religious differences ran deep. Amulon had to accept at least partial responsibility for Abinadi’s death, while Alma had reoriented himself religiously according to Abinadi’s teachings. Amulon has already established himself as opposed to Alma’s religion; now he uses his power to punish Alma’s people for exercising their faith, just as he increased their economic burdens.
