The contrast between the culture of Helam and that of King Noah is striking. Within a very short time the people are redirected into paths of prosperity and unity. The previous conditions of depravity and oppression are transformed into a state of unity and integrity—all because Alma has taught the people to follow principles of righteousness, sustain authorized priesthood service, and practice charity among themselves. If we apply divine principles in our lives, joy will result just as surely as day follows night. It is so today just as it was in Alma’s day, for God is “the same God yesterday, today, and forever” (D&C 20:12).
