“Every Man Should Love His Neighbor as Himself”

Brant Gardner

This teaching of neighborly love and peace is Alma’s summary to the previous text. He does not elaborate on the dangers of godless teachers but pleads for social unity rather than social stratification. He probably saw loving one’s neighbor as the antithesis to social stratification, which resulted in seeing oneself as better or worse than one’s neighbor (v. 7: “Ye shall not esteem one flesh above another, or one man shall not think himself above another”).
