Limhi gives the Lamanites the regular portion of tribute wine. As previously noted (see commentary accompanying Mosiah 22:6), this drink was probably pulque (or octli, in the Nahuatl language) the standard Mesoamerican intoxicant, made by fermenting the sap of the maguey plant, rather than wine made from grapes. Limhi also gives them an extra portion, a certain encouragement to overindulgence.
Text: Both the printer’s manuscript and the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon begin this sentence with “And it came to pass that king Limhi.… ” The phrase was deleted in all editions from 1837 through the present.
