Gideon was “a Nephite military leader and patriot (ca. 145–91 B.C.) who fought against the evils of king Noah (Mosiah 19:4). As a captain to king Limhi, he counseled with the king and helped avoid war with the Lamanites over their kidnapped daughters (Mosiah 20:17–22). Later he devised an inspired escape plan to deliver the Nephites out of bondage (Mosiah 22:3–9; 25:16; Alma 1:8)” (Largey, Book of Mormon Reference Companion, 292).
