The record we currently have does not specify when or where Alma received his authority to baptize and perform other priesthood functions, but he repeatedly attested that he had “authority from the Almighty God” (see also Mosiah 18:18: “having authority from God”; Mosiah 23:17: “none received authority … except it were by him from God”; and Alma 5:3: “having power and authority from God”). The Prophet Joseph Smith made this interesting statement: “All the prophets had the Melchizedek Priesthood and were ordained by God himself.” 38
