What is the purpose of baptism?

Thomas R. Valletta

“Some people are ‘baptized … for the remission of sins’ (D&C 84:64). However, since children who are baptized when they turn eight have no sins, the purpose of baptism that Alma stated—to give testimony of their covenant with the Lord—is the primary purpose of baptism (see also 2 Nephi 31:5–9; Mosiah 21:35; 3 Nephi 7:25). The Prophet Joseph Smith taught, ‘Baptism is a sign to God, to angels, and to heaven that we do the will of God’” (Garner, Search These Things Diligently, 154).
