This may be the single greatest verse of scripture in the Old Covenant (Old Testament) on the essential principle of the Atonement: substitution. In his vicarious sacrifice the Savior took upon himself not only all of our sins but also our pains and sorrows—in this way he knows how to succor his followers in their hour of emotional and spiritual need (compare Alma 7:11–12; Hebrews 2:18).
Some would think that the Savior was “stricken, smitten of God” because of his personal sins, but Isaiah taught otherwise: “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5; emphasis added).
