“Have Ye Done All This”

Brant Gardner

Abinadi has effectively accused Noah and his priests of blasphemy—of not understanding or teaching the very law that they claim to be upholding. Although the priests’ reaction is not directly described, Noah, who has been silent up to this point, is greatly offended, instantly declares Abinadi’s guilt, and commands that he be removed and executed.

Vocabulary: Assistant professor of English at Brigham Young University Don Norton notes that the contemporary definition of “fellow” in Joseph Smith’s day (according to Webster’s definition) was “a man without good breeding or worth; an ignoble man.” In the context of Noah’s certain disdain for Abinadi, this more archaic reading would provide deeper color to the recorded statement.
