Abinadi’s captors now claim to be retelling his prophecies to the king (vv. 9–12), Mormon, however, did not include these prophecies in his abridgment (v. 8). The rationalization offered by the captors of the king’s and priests’ innocence (vv. 13–15) is an example of the modern “spin” tactics of today: attack the accuser rather than answer the accusation. It reminds us also of the devil’s tactics outlined by Nephi: “stir them up to anger against that which is good. And others will he pacify, and lull them into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well” (2 Nephi 28:20– 21).
