Some scholars have asserted that wine produced from grapes was not made or used in ancient America, so they discount the reference to wine in Mosiah 11:15. But the scripture does not mention grapes, and many other types of drinks are often referred to as wine. The Spaniards who came to Mesoamerica hundreds of years ago wrote of several varieties of native “wines,” including an intoxicating beverage made with water, a specific type of tree bark, and honey. Other groups fermented juices from bananas, pineapples, hearts of palm, or the agave plant, and the Europeans applied the term wine to all of these beverages. Furthermore, it is possible that Nephite wine was actually made from grapes, as the grape plant was recently identified near ancient ruins in the Mexican state of Chiapas. (See Echoes, 288–289).
