King Limhi recognized that the twenty-four plates contained “a great mystery” and their translation would unfold all mysteries (v. 19). He was referring to more than the mystery of the Jaredite demise. The Jaredites had been destroyed and the people of Limhi had fallen into bondage because they would not follow the commandments of God. God has his prophets keep records that others might avoid the downfall or bondage of mankind. However, many of the children of men do not follow the wisdom that God has provided, but choose the animalistic tendencies of the natural man.
Referring to verse 20, it is often asked why wisdom is referred to in the feminine gender “she.” The first nine chapters of Proverbs in the Bible use the same gender. It may be because the female, even in her natural fallen state is more spiritually inclined than the male, or it may be that in the Semitic languages “wisdom” is a feminine noun. Regardless, it is common for the children of men to not seek the wisdom of God nor desire that the wisdom of God be the governing power in their lives (v. 20).
