“Gather Themselves Together to the Temple”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

Limhi called his people together at the temple. Again we see the ancient Near Eastern pattern demonstrated of how the temple is the great place of instruction and the center of societal activity. Later, Jesus would teach daily at the temple when he was in Jerusalem (Matthew 26:55; Mark 12:35; Luke 19:47; 20:1; John 7:14). And, of course, he appeared after his resurrection to the people on the American continents at the temple in Bountiful (3 Nephi 11:1). Limhi’s temple discourse emphasized an ancient principle: when the wicked rule, the people mourn (Proverbs 29:2). Limhi began by citing the Exodus as an example of God’s power to release from bondage and ended by encouraging the people to turn to the Lord, trust in him, and rest assured that he would deliver them.
