Sixteen Strong Men Were Chosen to Go to Lehi-Nephi

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

Under King Mosiah's direction, sixteen strong and presumably young men were provisioned and made ready to proceed to the Land of Lehi-Nephi, or to the City of Lehi-Nephi, to ascertain the fate of their brethren.

Meaning of the Name. We take the meaning of this name to be the Land of Nephi, or the City of Nephi in the Land of Lehi, to distinguish them from the land and city of the same name in Zarahemla, where there also was a land and a city largely occupied by Nephites. It is, as if one would say, the "Utah-Jordan," to distinguish that river from the famous "Palestine-Jordan." Helaman, the son of Helaman, later in the record informs us, "The land south was called Lehi, and the land north was called Mulek, which was after the son of Zedekiah; for the Lord did bring Mulek into the land north, and Lehi into the land south." (Jonah 1:3)1
