People were deeply affected by King Benjamin’s teachings. They showed their genuine conversion to those teachings by experiencing a mighty change in their hearts (see also Alma 5:14), having “no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually.” Notice that their spiritual rebirth included not only avoiding sins of commission (they had no desire to commit sin) but also avoiding sins of omission (they wanted to fill up their daily lives with good works).
At Christmastime we recall that Christ was “born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth.” Our spiritual rebirth comes by being willing to make a covenant to be obedient in all things and taking upon us the name and nature of Jesus Christ; our hearts are changed through faith on his name; we are born of him and become his sons and daughters, children of Christ. We take on family characteristics—in this case the attributes of Jesus Christ—just as babies adopt the traits of their families. As children of the family of Christ we come to look as well as act like our Father. The mighty change of heart also increases our desire and capacity to keep covenants and be obedient.
