1. Both the baptism of the water and the baptism of the Spirit symbolize birth. The baptism of water is accomplished through immersion by one having authority, thereby allowing the initiate to demonstrate his or her acceptance of the atonement of the Lord our Redeemer: one goes down into the “watery grave” in remembrance of Christ’s death and burial; one comes forth out of the water in remembrance of his coming forth from the tomb unto resurrected glory. “Know ye not”. Paul asked the Romans, “that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore were buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection”. (Romans 6:3-5).
