Christians are expected not just to be generous to the poor, but to refrain from making judgments about the poor. They cannot “stay their hand” (abstain from giving) just because they think that the recipient is poor for a reason—that she doesn’t work hard enough, or he has brought this misery upon himself. In other words, the commandment to give generously and take care of the poor is unmitigated by circumstance; we are told to give, period.
