What is the meaning of “succor”?

Thomas R. Valletta

“The word succor means to aid, assist, and to provide relief to someone in need. It apparently comes from the words sub- and cur, literally meaning ‘to go beneath’ or ‘to run to help or assist’” (Welch and Ricks, “Complete Text of Benjamin’s Speech,” 586).
