“Teach Them to Love One Another”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

Parents carry huge responsibilities for their children’s eternal well-being. They must provide for the temporal needs of their children. Just as important, in order for children to learn real discipleship, they must be disciplined (the two words have a common root meaning). Parents are responsible to teach their children (D&C 68:25–28), just as our Heavenly Father is the model Parent in teaching his children. Even though it is a natural propensity for beings in a fallen condition to fight and quarrel, children must be trained not to do so.

How does this scripture advise parents to prevent fighting and quarreling in the home? By teaching them to love one another. And how do parents do that? By teaching children to serve one another. That is done, at least in part, by parents themselves being an example of showing love through service.
