“Grow in the Knowledge of the Glory of Him”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
Repentance, the remission of sins, and steadfastness are the prerequisites identified by King Benjamin for obtaining a knowledge of God. Peter, having listed attributes of godliness, said: “If these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:8). Alma taught that the mysteries of God were granted according to our “heed and diligence” (Alma 12:9-10). Joseph Smith, teaching the same principle, used the phrase “diligence and obedience” (D&C 130:19). In each instance the principle is the same we can know God only to the extent that we seek to live his commandments and be like him. Thus the Savior testified: “This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3).
