“Nothingness, Worthless and Fallen State”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

We are reminded of our own nothingness, our worthless and fallen state. Why would this scripture strongly encourage us to remember our nothingness when we sing “I Am a Child of God” and quote “the worth of souls is great”? (D&C 18:10). The fact is, we are children of God and our souls are of great worth, but we must also remember that we, of ourselves, are nothing unless we yield to God and submit to him in all things. Without God we are nothing—“which thing I never had supposed,” the prophet Moses exclaimed when he realized this fundamental truth (Moses 1:10). It is a truth that provides perspective.
