This verse and others teach us that, in the end, no one else will need to judge us; “we shall have a perfect knowledge of all our guilt, and our uncleanness” (2 Nephi 9:14; see commentary at 2 Nephi 9:13–16). The Lord assures us that in that great Day of Judgment, under his direction as the great Judge, we shall have a “bright recollection” (Alma 11:43), a perfect memory, of all our words and works, and they will condemn us (Alma 12:14–15). In a sense it will be a self-judgment. Ultimately, the wicked will desire a self-imposed exile from the Lord.
But the most significant message of these verses is that the unrepentant will suffer the exact same things that the Lord suffered during the Atonement. They will shrink as Jesus shrank (D&C 19:18); they will drink out of the cup of the wrath of God, just as Jesus suffered “the wrath of Almighty God” (D&C 76:107; 88:106). Knowing this, it is difficult to understand why anyone would not want to take advantage of the vicarious punishment for broken laws suffered by the Lord on our behalf.
