Internal Reference: Nephi (1 Nephi 12:10-11) speaks of the garments of men being made white in the blood of Christ. This is clearly a redemptive theme, and links blood to atonement. This is a different meaning that the other common theme, which is ridding one’s own garments of the blood of others. With the reference to other’s garments being made white, Christ is in the atoning role. In the more common metaphor, the concept is used to indicate the discharge of spiritual duty.
The specific information of Jesus bleeding from every poor is a more active image, and appears to be new to the Book of Mormon with Benjamin’s speech. For possible cultural implications for mentioning the blood from every pore, see verse 11 below.
