“It seems significant that there was an angel on each continent who was commissioned to declare ‘glad tidings of great joy’ (compare Luke 2:10–11). Was this Gabriel? We do not know, but it was special enough news that heavenly messengers were called upon. This phrase is used three other times in the Book of Mormon (1 Nephi 13:37; Alma 13:22; Helaman 16:14), always by angels. Perhaps the use of this phrase requires a special commission” (Ogden and Skinner, Book of Mormon, 1:311).
