What did King Benjamin mean by saying “open your ears” and not “trifle” with his words?

Thomas R. Valletta

“King Benjamin warned his people to be serious and sober-minded; he had not gathered them together so they could trifle with his words; rather, they were to hear and hearken, to learn and obey. Today it is still true that the mysteries of God, ‘the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God’ (D&C 84:19), and ‘the power of godliness’ (D&C 84:20) may be unfolded to our view at the temple” (Ogden and Skinner, Book of Mormon, 1:307).
