The name Benjamin will give his people is Christ (see Mosiah 5:7-8). Christ is a sacred title which means “anointed,” or “anointed one.” As with virtually all titles, one does not have the right to assume it; rather, it must be conferred.
Those assuming the title by an anointing of their own are impostors and will be held strictly to account in the day of judgment.
Those upon whom the title is properly conferred are rightful heirs of the powers and privileges associated with the name. We are reminded of the Jewish exorcists who sought to cast out a devil in the name of the Jesus of whom Paul preached.
The evil spirit answered, saying, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.” (Acts 19:13-16.)
As those who falsely assume the name of Christ are without power, so those who have had it properly bestowed upon them and magnify their calling may have power to do all that he did and greater works also (see John 14:12).
