King Benjamin’s teachings to his sons and his magnificent sermon comprise the first five chapters of the book of Mosiah. Much of his sermon consists of the divine message imparted to him by an angel of the Lord. His teachings embrace a variety of key gospel themes: the value of the scriptures in our lives, obedience to the commandments, cultivating universal love of God and all mankind, the goodness of God and His blessings to His children, the infinite indebtedness of mankind to God (i.e., that we are all unprofitable servants), the importance of continually praising and thanking God for all things, avoiding contention, the dire consequences of transgression (loss of the Spirit), rebellion as the essence of enmity toward God, the happy state of those who keep the commandments, the coming of Christ and His atoning sacrifice, the role and function of prophets in declaring the word of the Lord, the name of Jesus Christ as the only source of salvation, the natural man being an enemy to God, the indispensable need to yield to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and many other important doctrines. King Benjamin teaches only the things that the Lord commands him to teach. He gives great emphasis to the principle that we will be judged according to our works.
