When Mormon had finished or had nearly completed his Abridgment, he found upon examining the great number of plates in his possession, the Smaller Plates of Nephi. On searching them, he found that they contained a part of the history which was included on the Larger Plates of Nephi.11 It is a duplicate account of Nephite history up to the reign of King Benjamin, or up to about 200 B.C. However, there was this difference, the Smaller Plates had engraven on them "many of the words of Nephi," many of the revelations he had received for the guidance of his people, and certain prophecies concerning the "Coming of Christ." These choice portions of their Scriptures were not written upon the Larger Plates. Mormon read them, and re-read them. He was amazed. He hadn't seen the Smaller Plates before. They were so important to him, and, knowing that many of the events they prophesied had already come to pass, and that the remainder must surely do so, he put them with his own abridgment, for, he said, 'They are choice to me; and I know they will be choice unto my brethren."
