It is doubtful that this and like texts were intended to convey the idea that such persons involved themselves in formal and un-interrupted prayer for such extended times. Paul wrote that we ought to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). In so writing he did not intend that we never get off our knees, but rather that we retain the spirit of prayer at all times, that we have, as it were, a prayer in our hearts. Enos would have spent his day interspersing formal prayer with soul searching, lamenting, imploring God for forgiveness, and pondering the promises of the scriptures.
