What is the solemn warning to those, like Sherem, who demand a sign?

Thomas R. Valletta

“The Lord has given significant warnings to those who seek signs without faith. To these ‘he showeth no signs, only in wrath unto their condemnation.’ (D&C 63:11.) The Book of Mormon contains two illustrations of this principle, and a memorable explanation of how men are condemned by seeking after a sign. Contending with Jacob, the learned Sherem said, ‘Show me a sign by this power of the Holy Ghost, in the which ye know so much.’ In this instance a sign was given. He was struck down, confessed his error, and died. (Jacob 7:13–20.)” (Oaks, The Lord’s Way, 84).
