At this point Sherem was apparently deeply flustered. No doubt he realized exactly what Jacob was doing to him. A superior mind was tying him in knots. Sherem was an experienced public speaker and debater, so he seems to have known that he had to do something to get himself off the defensive. He had to challenge Jacob in a way to put him on the defensive. Jacob's testimony concerning the Holy Ghost obviously suggested to Sherem a possible way out. Turning on Jacob, Sherem demanded, "Show me a sign by this power of the Holy Ghost, in the which ye know so much!"
