“I Would Not Deny Him”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

What Sherem really means is, “if there should be a Christ here and now, one that I can see and feel and hear, one which requires no faith or hope-then I would not deny him; I would believe.” This, in reality, is not true. The unbelievers and the faithless have become so hardened of heart that most of the time even tangible evidence is denied or rationalized (see, for example, 1 Nephi 16:38; Helaman 16:21). It is inevitable that proof is the last thing that those demanding it really desire. The louder the shouts for evidence, the less the inclination to accept it.
