What is an anti-Christ?

Thomas R. Valletta

“A group or individual who seeks to lead people away from Christ by denying Christ (e.g., Jacob 7:2; Alma 30:6, 12; Alma 31:16, 29), or offering an alternative to Christ and his plan of salvation (e.g., Jacob 7:7; Alma 1:4; 15:15; 30:16–17). Anti-Christs in the Book of Mormon include three prominent individuals: Sherem (Jacob 7:1–23), Nehor (Alma 1:2–16), and Korihor (Alma 30:6–30), as well as several groups of people, such as the Ammonihahites, the Amalekites and Amulonites, and the Zoramites. Typically, flattery, false logic, and deception are employed to deny Christ (Jacob 7:2, 4). … Anti-Christs attempted to deceive not only the people in general but even prophets and men of great faith (Jacob 7:5; Alma 1:7; 30:30)” (Largey, Book of Mormon Reference Companion, 66–67).
