“O Be Wise”

Brant Gardner

Jacob's closing exhibits what must be personal despair over the state of his people. After having told them of the eternal pains they must endure, and what the means of repentance are, he concludes "O be wise; what can I say more?" The choice is left in the hands of the congregation. Jacob's opinions are clear, but the burden of change is on the individual, and Jacob can do no more than exhort and explain the will of the Lord.
