Now we come to the verse in which Jacob identifies the meaning of "nourishment" in the allegory of the tame olive tree. It will be recalled that it was the "roots" which provided the nourishment for the branches so they would bring forth the good fruit. Jacob says this nourishment was "the good word of God." He then goes on to say, in effect, that after enjoying the revelations and manifest power of God, one cannot bring forth bad fruit without risking the penalty of being hewn down and cast into the fire.
