Literature: The dramatic tension is reinforced by this declaration of intent. Botanically, cutting down the corrupt tree would make space and resources available for planting a new, and hopefully more successful, tree. Thus, the Lord’s plan is justified both by the tree’s failure and by the increased usefulness of the cleared land.
